Bournemouth’s Older People Forum was successfully launched on Friday 23rd March.
The Forum has been set up to bring together groups of older people to identify issues which affect our health and wellbeing , to request information and to hear about social activities that are available in Bournemouth. Over 100 residents began work on the problem of isolation and loneliness. Their experience was clearly shown by the views they put forward. These have been collated and actions to be taken have been prioritized in the full knowledge that many successful befriending clubs already exist in our town. Information about gadgets, that assist our independence, were demonstrated, with an emphasis on low cost.
The intention is that at every Forum there is an opportunity for our members to see, and take part in, at least two social activities. As we intend to be a ‘voice’ for older people a community choir led the singing of ‘You’ve got a friend’. We all felt that this was the right song for us. This was closely followed by the group called ‘A Dance A Day’ who showed us how much they enjoyed taking part in this kind of activity. The room was full of laughter and ‘interesting’ dance moves as members joined in.
Now these activities might not be quite your ‘cup of tea’ but Forum members have put forward lots of great ideas for future social moments. So do come and join us for the serious work and the fun and put forward your points of view. I look forward to meeting you on Friday 1st June, Premier Inn, Westover Road, Bournemouth. Doors open at 10.00 and the Forum runs from10.30-12.30.

DANCE DAY - A CELEBRATION OF DANCE!!

Making History on Friday 16 September 2011
Over a hundred of Bournemouth's Older People(BOP), see photo, took part in an open meeting to decide if they wouild like to start the process leading to a Forum. The answer was a resounding yes. The event was strongly supported by the charity Access Dorset and funded by the Community Foundation , Dorset, Active at 60. Hilary Foggo, Age UK Dochester, told us about the other older people forums in Dorset and what they have achieved. The next step is to form a planning group that will set up the internal structure of organisation and clear policies. We will then prepare and celebrate the launch of this new community group.
PLANNING GROUP FORMED
We were overwhelmed by the large number that wanted to be part of the planning group and have decided to ask nine people. They have started their work and we will announce the date of the first BOP Forum soon.
