Press release: Fundraisers braved scorching heat in Race for Equality
Record breaking weather left participants in this year’s Race for Equality heading for the sea to cool off.
More than 200 people took part in the event on Sunday October 2 from Bournemouth to Boscombe Pier, and while most wheeled or walked along the promenade, 20 plucky participants swam the distance. The event raised well-needed funds to improve leisure provision in Dorset for disabled and older people.
Organiser Jonathan Waddington-Jones, of disability charity Access Dorset, said: “The Race for Equality seems to always coincide with extremes of weather – last year it was gale force winds and torrential rain and this year it was the best October day in the UK’s recorded history. The heat was quite a challenge for many of our participants but a real sense of camaraderie got them through.
“Race for Equality is all about integration and we were delighted to see such a mix of people taking part, including young and old, disabled and non-disabled and many people with learning disabilities.”
Among those taking part on the day were Bournemouth Athletic Club, Wessex Accessible Cycling, Remix, the Unite Club in Ringwood and the South West Dorset Open Water Swimming Club, Dorset Fiftyplus, and Seabrook Seals.
The event was started by Geoff Holt MBE, the first disabled person to sail unaided across the Atlantic
